Maine Coon Cats

Maine Coon cats: more about this beautiful breed

Maine Coon cats are one of the largest cat breeds in the world. They are beautiful to look at and are loved for their tough appearance and friendly, affectionate character. They are very sweet, playful and reliable. They are sociable and enjoy interacting with people and other pets. They are also called the dogs among cats.

Maine Coon cats are cats that can withstand the cold. They have thick fur with multiple undercoats, furry ears and a thick hairy tail. Originally they were used in Maine to catch mice on the farm.

Maine Coon cats have adapted well to their environment and have become real house cats over the years.

Polydactyl Maine Coon

Polydactyle means that the cat has more than 18 toes. Normally a cat has 4/4/5/5 = 18 toes. A polydactyl has more. Often 6/6/6/6 or even 6/6/7/7 like our Allegiance Love April. The legs of a polydactyl are therefore much wider. That used to be appreciated on the farm in Maine: with these wide legs they can jump much higher, run faster and therefore catch more mice. And that’s what the Maine Coon was originally intended for.

Unfortunately, polydactyly is less known these days and is not allowed on shows. However, we think it is important to stick to the original function of the Maine Coon, catching mice. And that goes better with thick legs. So why breed this advantage out of the breed? We’re just trying to breed it back in. In America, a polydactyl cat is welcome at Tica shows.

Maine Coon appearance

The Maine Coon cat is very muscular, grows to an average length of 1 meter and weighs between 4 and 10 kilograms. A male can weigh up to 12 kilos, a female weighs on average between 5 and 7 kilos. They also come in different color combinations. Its large muzzle, firm chin, lush lion’s mane, large plumes on the ears and the large bushy tail give the Maine Coon an imposing appearance.

Maine Coons usually reach their full size when they are about 4 years old.

Maine Coon age

In general, Maine Coon cats live to be between 12 and 15 years old, this of course depends on several factors such as: health, conditions and whether they stay indoors or are allowed to go outside.

Maine Coon character

Maine Coon cats are very social and love people around them. They are affectionate, friendly, loyal and playful. They also get along well with children and other animals in your household. They are curious, which makes them happy to contact you.

Maine Coon cats don’t mind being picked up. They don’t mind cuddling at all! They prefer to lie next to you on the couch all day long.
